BARKER, N.Y. — The New York State Police briefly shut down Interstate 81 south in the Town of Barker, Broome County, N.Y., after responding to a multi-vehicle crash in a work zone.
Troopers responded to the crash on Aug. 19 around 11:59 a.m. The crash involved four vehicles, including a tractor-trailer that caused the initial crash, the police said.
The tractor-trailer struck the second vehicle, pushing it forward and causing a chain reaction that struck the third and fourth vehicles.
One occupant from each vehicle was transported to UHS Wilson Medical Center, with no reports of any life-threatening injuries. There have also been no reported injuries or equipment damage for the road workers who were there at the time of the crash.
Two dogs fled from one of the involved vehicles, a German Shepard and a poodle-type, that were last seen in the area along I-81 and Route 11.
Following the crash, the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation discovered that the tractor-trailer experienced a fuel leak after the crash.
The interstate was reopened after only a few minutes of closure.
The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
