New York state officials are once again sounding the alarm about drivers going too fast. This time, they are trying to change behavior with billboards reading “Speed Kills, Slow Down.”
The billboards have a camera that measures the speed of passing cars.
“Speeding remains one of the most dangerous behaviors on our roadways, and these enforcement efforts send a clear message that it will not be tolerated,” “The New York State Police, together with our law enforcement partners across the state, will continue to target speeding, impaired driving and other reckless behaviors that put everyone at risk. Our goal is not simply to issue tickets, it is to change dangerous driving habits, prevent crashes and save lives. I urge every driver to slow down, stay alert, and make responsible choices every time they get behind the wheel,” New York State Police Superintendent Steven James said.
Officials say the new campaign seeks to encourage drivers to slow down for their safety and the safety of others on the roadway.
“Since 2020, the number of speed-related crashes increased 17% statewide. Worse yet, fatalities and injuries related to speeding were up 20% statewide. Those are staggering numbers,” said New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Acting Commissioner Christian Jackstadt.
Officials say during two dedicated speeding campaigns this summer, more than 30,000 speeding tickets were issued.
