ALBANY, NY (WRGB) — Lawmakers are responding to the report that a woman was arrested for planning a terror attack on the New York State Capitol.
Federal investigators say Jessica Bowie planned an attack, aiming to “destroy as much of the building as possible and kill the senators while they are meeting.”
Gov. Kathy Hochul released the following statement: “Today, the U.S. Department of Justice and FBI announced the arrest of an individual who allegedly plotted an attack on the New York State Capitol. I’m grateful to the FBI for leading this investigation and to the New York State Police for their work to apprehend this dangerous individual. Earlier this year, amid a rise in political violence and threats against public officials, we took steps to strengthen security at the State Capitol and across state government. While there is no immediate threat at this time, we will continue working closely with our law enforcement partners to protect New Yorkers and keep our communities safe.”

State Sen. Jim Tedisco (R-C, Ballston Lake) also reacted to the arrest, stating, “As we near the solemn 25th anniversary of the terrorist attack on New York and our country on September 11th, 2001, we again see today that we must continue to be vigilant against those who hate America, our freedoms, liberties and very way of life. As elected representatives, we know what we sign up for and the potential risks involved in getting into public service, but what’s most insidious about this alleged terrorist plot was the total disregard for the safety of the many everyday citizens, taxpayers and staff members who visit and work at our beautiful state Capitol on a daily basis. They are the most important part of this republic and representative democracy. Whether it’s local, state or federal government buildings, their health and safety should never be in question when using their First Amendment rights in helping to guide their governments. I want to thank the FBI and all the members of law enforcement who investigated this alleged terrorist plot on the NYS Capitol and for successfully apprehending this individual and preventing them from executing this terrible attack and harming anyone.”

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) released the following statement: “The alleged ISIS-inspired plot targeting the New York State Capitol building in Albany is deeply troubling. The same groups who attacked us more than two decades ago are still inspiring attacks today, and we must remain vigilant. My office has been in touch with the FBI and has requested the FBI examine any potential ties between this individual and ISIS. I’m grateful to local, state, and federal law enforcement partners who worked diligently to prevent what could have been a devasting attack. Mere weeks before the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, this is a stark reminder that we must do everything we can to ensure all Americans are protected from any threats and acts of violence, including fully funding counterterrorism programs. New Yorkers know all too well the generational harm that terrorism can inflict on our communities, and my thoughts are with them as we continue to root out threats and keep communities safe.”
