NYS Capital — NYS Assemblyman John McDonald (D-Cohoes), joined Power & Politics live from the NYS Capitol on Thursday, as he, and along with other Capital Region and State lawmakers, reacted to an alleged threat at the NYS Capitol.

“Today’s episode is-it’s kind of shocking in some aspects, but not surprising in others,” McDonald told Tom Eschen. “This is unfortunately the world we live in today, and it’s not just a New York State issue. I talk to my colleagues throughout the country, and state capital security, government security, because government is a symbol of some kind of an attack, is coming under much greater scrutiny than ever before. And you know, listen, we’re thankful the FBI and the Feds have done their job and what they’re supposed to do. We thank the State police and all members of law enforcement. But it’s a stark reminder that there is danger lurking out there.”

New York Governor Kathy Hochul also addressed the report of the threat:

“The Capitol is the center of our government. It’s a place where people come to work every single day to do the work of the people. That includes members of my own staff, other elected officials, legislative staff, journalists, including those who are members of the Legislative Correspondents Association,” Governor Hochul said. “The Capitol is also a major tourist destination. People visit from around the world literally every single day. So I’m grateful to the FBI for leading this investigation, foiling this plot and protecting our people. I’m also grateful to the New York State Police for their work in making the arrest. As I’ve said before, political violence has no place in our state, and I believe this suspect should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Earlier this year, amid a surge in political violence and threats against public officials, we took steps to strengthen security at the State Capitol and across state government.”

The Governor added that there was never any active danger at the State Capitol, and that, as of her address this afternoon, there were no specific, credible threats against the Capitol.

Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortt (R) released this statement: “The announcement regarding an ISIS-inspired terrorist plot targeting our State Capitol building is not only disturbing but reinforces why law enforcement at all levels must communicate and work together for the safety and well being of New Yorkers. I want to thank the Department of Justice, FBI and New York State Police for their immediate action that undoubtedly saved lives.”

Albany Assemblymember Gabriella Romero (D), released this statement:

“As I’m sure many of our community members were, I was shaken by today’s news. The safety of everyone who works in and visits our Capitol is a big priority, and I’m grateful to the law enforcement officers and investigators whose work helped prevent an attack. I’m relieved to know there is no immediate threat at this time.”

NYS Senator Pat Fahy (D-Albany), posted on social media:

NYS Senator Jim Tedisco ((R,C-Ballston Lake) sent this statement:

“As we near the solemn 25th anniversary of the terrorist attack on New York and our country on September 11th, 2001, we again see today that we must continue to be vigilant against those who hate America, our freedoms, liberties and very way of life. As elected representatives, we know what we sign up for and the potential risks involved in getting into public service, but what’s most insidious about this alleged terrorist plot was the total disregard for the safety of the many everyday citizens, taxpayers and staff members who visit and work at our beautiful state Capitol on a daily basis. They are the most important part of this republic and representative democracy. Whether it’s local, state or federal government buildings, their health and safety should never be in question when using their First Amendment rights in helping to guide their governments. I want to thank the FBI and all the members of law enforcement who investigated this alleged terrorist plot on the NYS Capitol and for successfully apprehending this individual and preventing them from executing this terrible attack and harming anyone.”
