DEWITT, N.Y. — The DeWitt Police Department released the names of two people who were killed in an early morning crash on Aug. 19.

The police department identified the deceased as 26-year-old Quavan U. Maupin of Bronx, N.Y. and 21-year-old Jamilka A. Cirino, of Syracuse, N.Y. The police did not say who was driving the vehicle.

DeWitt Police Lieutenant Jerry Pace said that, as of Thursday morning, officers have yet to discover how the crash that killed the two occurred.

“There has been no determination yet as to the circumstances leading up to or the contributing factors of the crash,” said Pace.

Around 12:12 a.m., an officer patrolling the Franklin Park neighborhood heard a loud crash. Law enforcement went to the scene of the crash and found a 2026 Kia sedan smashed into a tree on Franklin Park Drive between St. Paul Drive and Deerfield Road.

The police said an investigation determined that the Kia was traveling north on Franklin Park Drive when it crossed the center line just north of St. Paul Drive, left the west shoulder of the road and struck the tree.

The crash destroyed the Kia. It was the only vehicle found at the scene. The police noted that it was registered in the Bronx.

A section of Franklin Park Drive was closed for hours as emergency crews worked.
