Police are looking for the driver of a gray BMW that fled the scene after fatally hitting a cyclist in Brooklyn on Thursday night.
NYPD officials said the crash happened around 11:50 p.m. at the intersection of East 54th Street and Avenue I in Flatlands. The BMW driver and the cyclist were traveling in opposite directions along Avenue I when they collided as the car turned left onto East 54th Street.
EMS workers took the cyclist to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to police. The BMW drove away, and police did not immediately have a description of the driver.
Officials did not release the identity of the cyclist as they worked to notify his family.
Thursday’s crash came as police continue looking for the driver of a black BMW that fatally struck 51-year-old Angelo Camera on Tuesday night, who was crossing the Bruckner Expressway in the Bronx on an e-bike.
Fatalities involving both traditional bicycles and other motorized two-wheelers are up so far this year compared to last, according to traffic collision data from the NYPD. E-bikes, stand-up scooters and motorcycles are leading the trend, the data shows — each with several more fatal crashes this year than last.
