Keene, N.Y. — A Rochester hiker was airlifted to a hospital after suffering an ankle injury near the summit of Mount Marcy in the Adirondacks, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
A Marcy summit steward contacted authorities around 2:30 p.m. Aug. 10 after the 50-year-old hiker slipped on a wet rock and heard a crack in their ankle, the department said.
A passing hiker who is a podiatrist splinted the injured ankle before rescuers arrived.
New York State Police flew a helicopter to the scene, where a forest ranger harnessed the injured hiker before another ranger hoisted them into the aircraft. The department said the hiker was then flown to a local hospital for treatment.
The rescue was completed around 4:11 p.m.
