For years, communities across New York and the country have been ravaged by the opioid crisis.
Here in New York, more than 5,000 people died from opioids alone in 2023. For their role in the crisis, drug makers and distributors are required to send more than $50 billion to state and local governments. For New York, that means over $3 billion.
Fast forward to today, and nearly half a billion of those dollars have been dispersed, and a new report from the Office of Addictions Services and Supports shows where that money has gone.
