It’s been a summer full of big events in New York City, from the World Cup and the Knicks championship to Taylor Swift’s wedding and the country’s 250th birthday. The US Open starts this Sunday with Fan Week, while Summer Streets is also wrapping up its five-week run this weekend.
Here’s what’s happening and how it’ll complicate getting around.
Summer Streets
This much-loved program, which closes down New York streets to make room for art, music and fitness classes, is ending its 2026 season with simultaneous car-free routes in Brooklyn and the Bronx this Saturday.
In Brooklyn, Eastern Parkway will be closed to cars from Grand Army Plaza to Buffalo Avenue. In the Bronx, Grand Concourse will be closed from East Tremont Avenue to Mosholu Parkway. Both run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The US Open
The final Grand Slam of the tennis season is coming to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens. Events begin Sunday with a free Fan Week. The main draw begins Aug. 30.
The Department of Transportation says there will be street closures in Queens for the tournament at the NYPD’s discretion. The NYPD announced heightened security measures during a Friday morning press conference.
City officials are urging fans to skip driving — parking is limited at the tennis center and organizers are expecting more than 1.2 million fans over the next few weeks. To help accommodate tennis fans, additional subway and Long Island Rail Road trains will be running at the end of each day.
The NYPD said multiple Queens roadways will be closed over the course of the tournament, through Sept. 13. The closures will affect several major roadways, including the Grand Central Parkway, Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, Cross Island Expressway, Long Island Expressway, Whitestone Expressway and Van Wyck Expressway.

Pakistan’s Independence Day is observed on Aug. 14, but festivities are kicking off this Sunday in Manhattan with a parade and festival.
The parade steps off at 10 a.m. at 38th Street and Madison Avenue, making its way down to 27th Street. A couple blocks south, celebrations turn into a street festival between 24th and 25th streets, including musical performances and cultural vendors.
Big Apple Performing Arts Fair
This Midtown street fair means Sixth Avenue will be closed from 42nd to 56th streets both Saturday and Sunday.
