A woman died after crashing her SUV into a backyard swimming pool on Long Island, according to police.

The 40-year-old was behind the wheel in the driveway of a home in Hewett around 9:30 a.m. Friday when she suddenly lost control of the vehicle, Nassau County police said. The 2023 GMC struck a tree as well as a parked car with no one inside, before plunging into the water behind the house on Elinor Road near Woodside Drive.

It was not immediately clear what caused the woman to lose control of the SUV and end up in the in-ground pool.

The woman was pulled from the vehicle and responding officers tried to give her CPR on the way to the hospital, according to police. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Neither the woman’s name nor a cause of death had yet been shared. An investigation was ongoing.
