SYRACUSE, N.Y. — With thousands of people expected to visit the Great New York State Fair, Syracuse police are reminding fairgoers to plan ahead and stay mindful of their surroundings.
Getting to and from the fair:
Drivers should expect delays, especially during peak arrival and departure times. SPD recommends monitoring traffic apps like Waze and considering alternate routes.
“We always tell everyone to monitor apps like the Waze app, because it will give you real time traffic information,” Sergeant Tom Blake said. “There might be times you may want to avoid taking I-690 and use some of the back ways to get to the fairgrounds.” Sgt. Blake added that leaving at an off-peak time can also help avoid heavy traffic.
Keep an eye on children:
With crowds, attractions and plenty of distractions, it can take only a couple of seconds for a child to wander away. SPD says parents and guardians should keep track of children and be aware of what they are doing. Police also recommend using a buddy system and making sure cellphones are fully charged in case someone gets separated.
Be mindful on social media:
Police are also reminding fairgoers to think before posting. Sharing that you are away from home or posting details that reveal your house is unattended could create an opportunity for a break-in.
Plan for a safe ride home:
SPD is also reminding people not to drive impaired. “Have a plan, you should have a designated driver or use a ride share service to get you to and from the fairgrounds,” Sgt. Blake said.
The Great New York State Fair runs Wednesday, Aug. 26 through Labor Day, Sept, 7.
