NEW BRITAIN — The Central Connecticut State women’s soccer team posted its second straight shutout in a 2-0 win at home against UAlbany on Sunday. The Blue Devils scored a goal on either side of halftime to win their second straight game.
Central opened the scoring with 16 minutes to play in the opening half. Off a corner kick, Rebecca Devereux finished off the kick from Kayla Ward at the near corner to make it 1-0.
UAlbany opened the second half with its first scoring chance of the afternoon. Mariella Fulcher would put a shot to the lower right, but it was stopped by Ellie Westcott.
CCSU would double its lead with just over 20 minutes remaining when Eve Girardi picked up a loose ball inside the 18-yard box and fired her shot into the open net to make it 2-0.
With just over 5:30 to play, the Great Danes had their best scoring opportunity. Lila Algarin took a shot from the left side just outside 20 yards away, but it hit the crossbar, and Tamia Nelson’s shot on the rebound was saved by Westcott.
Westcott made 10 saves for the Blue Devils to collect her first career shutout.
The Blue Devils play at Bryant on Thursday, August 27, in a 7 p.m. kickoff.
The Central Connecticut men’s soccer team opened the 2026 season with a second-half surge to down Manhattan, 3-2, on Sunday. The Blue Devils erased a two-goal deficit with a three-goal outburst in the span of 6:38 to get the win.
The Blue Devils created the first chance of the afternoon when fifth-year forward Ben-Martin Wilkinson broke down the right wing and got off a shot. Gaspar Homar Bennasar pushed it aside to set up CCSU’s first corner kick of the day.
The Jaspers would open the scoring in the 17th minute when Pau Mascarell controlled the ball and sent a long pass ahead to Tycho van Haaren. van Haaren got behind the CCSU defense and would slip his shot by the goalkeeper to make it 1-0.
The Blue Devils would create another chance just past midway through the opening half. First-year Alen Kapetanovic would cut through the middle of the Jaspers’ defense and got off a low shot that was smothered by Homar Bennasar.
Manhattan doubled the lead just under five minutes into the second half when Khaled Daoud cut through the middle of the defense and slipped a pass to Ziv Dahan, who pushed a low shot into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
CCSU cut the deficit in half in the 62nd minute when its attack resulted in a foul by Manhattan bringing down a Blue Devil in the penalty box. Miguel Gonzalez converted the kick to make it 2-1.
Central tied it just two minutes later when Santiago Marin Guttierez kicked a cross from the left wing that found Wilkinson in front of goal, who redirected the kick to make it 2-2.
The Blue Devils took the lead at the 67:39 mark, which was set up by a free kick following a handball just outside the 18-yard box. Marin had his initial shot saved on the free kick, but Jaran Klevberg would get a shot off the rebound, and following another save, he would punt it into an open net to make it 3-2.
Following a red card in the 82nd minute, CCSU played a man down, but the Jaspers managed just one shot, which was saved by Carter Fitzgerald.
CCSU travels to UMass Lowell for a 2 p.m. kickoff on Thursday, Aug. 27.
AMHERST, Mass. – No. 24 UConn men’s soccer was defeated by the UMASS Minutemen, 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field. The Huskies fall to 0-2 on the season.
UMass quickly took control of the match, scoring the game’s opening goal just 45 seconds in. The Minutemen doubled their lead in the 12th minute, putting the Huskies down 2-0 early on.
UMass continued to dominate in the early going, scoring their third goal of the half in the 25th minute, putting UConn in a deep hole at 3-0.
The Huskies carried the three-goal deficit into the halftime break. Despite trailing, UConn held an 8-7 advantage in shots in the opening half.
Senior forward Elijah Langford scored the Huskies’ lone goal of the match in the 75th minute, recording his second goal of the season to make it 3-1.
UConn continued to throw numbers forward down the stretch, but the deficit proved to be too large for the Huskies to overcome.
UConn returns to Morrone Stadium on Thursday, August 27 as the Huskies will welcome Fairfield to Storrs. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
