The Jamaica Bangladesh Friends Society held its 20th annual community-wide “Back to School Giveaway” on Friday, Aug. 21, at Captain Tilly Park.

The Jamaica Bangladesh Friends Society partnered with the Jamaica Hill Community Association and Save the People to host its 20th annual “Back to School Giveaway” on Friday, Aug. 21, at Captain Tilly Park in Jamaica.
Free backpacks and essential school supplies were given out to kids on hand for the event, helping make sure they are properly equipped and ready to learn in the upcoming school year.

“We try to give to kids and families who are struggling to get the kids ready to go back to school,” Jamaica Bangladesh Friends Society Founder and President Mohammed Islam Delwar said. “We try to think of everything possible a kid needs to go back to school.

A grassroots effort, the Back to School Giveaway offered critical relief to families in the Jamaica neighborhood during a time when the cost of school necessities is increasing.

“It’s very important that we support our youths in need before back-to-school,” Jamaica Hill Community Association President Saaif Alam said. “We have notebooks, we have backpacks, we have socks and we have plenty of supplies. We do this [giveaway] every summer.”

In addition to the giveaway of school supplies, the event also featured plenty of entertainment for the kids on hand. This included food, drinks, face painting, clowns, balloon animals and more.
