A group of mysterious figures were spotted coming out of a manhole in New York City last week.
In a video shared to TikTok over the weekend, a group appearing to be all men wearing headlamps were caught on camera popping out from the city sewers near Manhattan’s Penn Station.
While the user notes that five men emerged from the sewer, the clip captured three of the five quickly pulling themselves from the manhole at 32nd Street and Seventh Avenue at 4:19 a.m. last Tuesday, August 18, just blocks away from the busy Madison Square Garden.
The eerie video comes amid a string of unusual sightings of men emerging from manholes in Williamsburg and Gravesend, raising concerns across the city and even sparking a probe by the NYPD.
According to sources close to the New York Post, an NYPD Emergency Services and New York City Department of Environmental Protection investigation found that the strange phenomenon was spurred by people searching the city’s 7,500-mile sewer system for valuables.
“Mostly people who do this think there’s treasure. Precious metals. Lost property,” a source told the outlet. “Yes, [the sewer-hunting is] not ideal from a security standpoint. But it’s [the city Department of Environmental Protection’s] infrastructure to secure.”
The NYPD is actively investigating the latest video, the Post says, though no arrests have been made.
While the incidents appear to be part of a larger trend, the city’s Environmental Protection Department warned that sneaking into manholes is “both illegal and extremely dangerous.”
“Sewers can contain numerous hazards, including noxious and potentially deadly gases, unstable surfaces, flooding risks, and confined spaces,” the DEP said in a statement to the outlet. “For these reasons, members of the public should never enter a pipe, drain, catch basin, manhole, or outfall.”
The Post also noted that the DEP did an inspection of the sewers in the area following the viral clip and found that there had been no damage to the infrastructure.
