SOUTHERN BROOKLYN — Rep. Nicole Malliotakis awarded an Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn student top honors in the Congressional Art Competition for the 11th District.
Students were encouraged to create artwork that celebrated America’s history, heritage, ideals and values that define the nation in honor of the country’s 250th anniversary. Junior student Phoebe Jiang won the award and was given a certificate at the congressmember’s Brooklyn office.
“I congratulate Adelphi Academy’s Phoebe Jiang on winning this year’s Congressional Art Competition,” said Malliotakis. “We recently had an opportunity to meet at my Brooklyn office, and her talent and passion for art is inspiring. Her winning painting recognizes patriotism and service and is a beautiful tribute to our military men and women. The original is now on display at the U.S. Capitol for the next year.”
The competition was open to all high school students in the district.
Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors this nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district.
“This extraordinary exhibit showcasing the most talented artists in the nation is displayed prominently and viewed by millions of Capitol visitors each year,” Adelphi stated in a Facebook post.
Jiang met Malliotakis at her Brooklyn office, where she discussed her passion for art and Adelphi. Malliotakis awarded her a special certificate of recognition for her outstanding accomplishment. Iphigenia Romanos, Adelphi’s head of school, attended to congratulate Jiang and thank Malliotakis.

Established in 1982, the Congressional Art Competition aims to encourage student creativity while fostering civic engagement.
