The Town of Tonawanda has approved purchasing Axon License Plate Reader cameras.
Concerned residents spoke out against the purchase Monday, citing privacy concerns and the cameras being used to watch people who have done nothing wrong.
Interim Town Supervisor John Flynn rebutted before voting in favor of the cameras. He said public safety is his top concern and these cameras can help keep the area safe.
Flynn added that if anyone does abuse the information the cameras provide, he promises any punishment will be swift and heavy handed.
Cameras will be placed along New York state highways.
