Lehman College students are getting a new option to live closer to campus with the opening of the college’s first-ever residence hall in the Bronx.

The Lehman Grand opened earlier this month inside the historic Dollar Savings Bank building on the Grand Concourse, not far from the college’s campus.

For students like Ivette Bonilla, who goes by Ivy, living in the new dorms offers an opportunity to become more involved in campus life.

“I wanted to live here because socially, it gives me a lot of different experiences with other people and allows me to be more connected as well. I want to be more involved on campus,” Bonilla said.

About 50 students are currently living in the residence hall, which has space for more than 180 residents.

Rooms range from doubles to quads, and include private bathrooms. Some rooms also come with impressive views of the city.

The residence hall has shared lounges and kitchens, a laundry room and a movie and game room.

Prices range from about $9,000 to $16,000, depending on occupancy and the room’s views.

The addition of student housing makes Lehman College the seventh City University of New York school to offer on-campus housing.

Bonilla has decorated her room with fake ivy leaves, posters and other personal touches. She said she also found her rug on Facebook Marketplace.

“I have a lot of different posters going on that are all really special to me,” Bonilla said.

“I just want to make it a room where it’s not just comfortable for me, but comfortable for possibly my friends that will visit,” Bonilla said.

The residence hall also provides a new way for students to build relationships with their classmates.

Kiana Bonner, director of residence life at Lehman, said having the option to live on campus can help students focus more fully on their education.

“When students are commuting, I think they have a lot of outside responsibilities that are kind of pulling and tugging. And so, they really don’t get to fully focus on the college experience,” Bonner said. “And I think allowing them to have the option to live on campus, they can unplug from all the other noises and focus in on this experience and focus on college and their goal, which is that degree.”
