How many drag queens in hot air balloons does it take to break a world record?

Apparently 26. At least, that’s how many queens showed up for a one-of-a-kind adventure Monday morning.

According to Kelly Dorius, owner of Vista Balloon Adventures, the idea came to her a couple years ago, after she met legendary Portland queen Poison Waters who took a hot air balloon ride in drag.

“And so I thought, why wouldn’t we just fill all the balloons with drag queens?” asked Dorius. “The beauty of balloons with the colors in the air and the beauties of drag with all their colors is a great combination.”

The hot air balloon ride company launched four balloons, each with around eight queens, into the sky around 6:30 in the morning. The just-under-four-mile journey took about 45 minutes.

Some queens woke up at 1 a.m. Others pulled all-nighters for their 6 a.m. call time in Newberg. Some were extremely nervous; some were excited — but everyone ended up loving it.

“And being in a balloon with your sisters… We were just all here for each other and supporting each other through it,” said drag queen Bolivia Carmichaels. “I’m just so glad that I’m standing on the ground again.”

Though it won’t be officially submitted to Guinness World Records, it’s not the first time local drag queens have accomplished something historic. Knowing Portland, it probably won’t be the last.
