New York’s legislation prohibiting state and local law enforcement agencies from cooperating with ICE went into effect yesterday. Under the “Local Cops, Local Crimes Act,” the agreements must be terminated, setting up a potential legal battle with New York counties that have not yet committed to comply with the statute. This is New York Governor Kathy Hochul.
Gov. Kathy Hochul: “ICE’s dangerous and aggressive tactics to pursue civil immigration — again, I’m very clear here: for civil immigration enforcement — this only continues to evoke fear on our streets. And our local cops will not be part of it, because we hold our police to a higher standard. They hold themselves to a higher standard.”
