NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani Sued by Business Coalition Over City-Owned Grocery Stores Operating Like Walmart

The Multicultural Business Coalition filed two lawsuits in New York State court on Monday, August 24, challenging New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s plan for city-owned grocery stores, New York Post reported.The Multicultural Business Coalition says the municipal stores would violate civil rights of “hundreds” of owners and that Zohran Mamdani’s city-owned grocery stores mirror Walmart-style discounting at 30% below market.A class-action filing represents owners from groups historically discriminated against, while a second suit argues the pricing rivals or exceeds Walmart.The group alleges the city skipped proper review, including land-use and impact studies, and asks the court to require an economic analysis.In July, Mamdani announced one city-owned grocery in each borough offering a core basket 30% cheaper, according to NYC.gov.
