NEW YORK (PIX11) — Getting kids the supplies they need to succeed in the upcoming school year can put a financial strain on parents.
Backpacks are being handed out in Manhattan at a Back-to-School community event on Friday. Catholic Charities is sponsoring the event to help parents avoid digging deep into their wallets.

Over 250 backpacks will be handed out to kids attending kindergarten through 12th grade.
Fun activities will be held at the event, and attendees can also inquire about various social service programs like SNAP and eviction prevention.
The Back-to-School event will take place on Friday, from 1 p.m to 3 p.m. at the Cardinal Spellman Center, located at 137 East 2nd St. Attendees do not need to register in advance.
The New York Restoration Project is also hosting a backpack giveaway event on Saturday in East Harlem, but you will need to register ahead of time.
The event will take place on Saturday at the Home Depot Children’s Garden and Los Amigos Community Garden, located at 421 E. 117th St., from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
