Around NYC

1. Trump renews his attacks on Mamdani and threats against the city

President Donald Trump again threatened to withhold federal funds and send troops to New York City if Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani is elected mayor.

Trump labeled Mamdani a communist and said he wouldn’t “be generous” to a city led by him.

Mamdani dismissed the remarks, saying federal funding is required by law, not presidential discretion. Gov. Kathy Hochul called Trump’s threat “outrageous” and vowed to “fight like hell” to prevent it.

2. Air traffic controllers warn passengers about dangers of shutdown

Air traffic controllers and other aviation workers leafletted at LaGuardia and 13 other airports Tuesday, warning travelers of the risks from the ongoing government shutdown.

Controllers must still work without pay, and many say missing paychecks could create stress and staffing issues. With a shortage of nearly 3,800 controllers nationwide, officials warn the shutdown could worsen flight delays and jeopardize modernization efforts.

3. Oversight board demands transparency from Rikers officials

The city’s jail complex on Rikers Island has long been plagued by violence, with officials there often accused of being less than transparent. On Tuesday, those officials were again accused of obstruction — this time by its independent oversight body, the Board of Correction.

On Tuesday, the board unanimously approved a resolution condemning the department for failing to “fully and promptly respond to the board’s request for information and documentation regarding basic jail operations,” which it argues is a breach of the department’s legal obligations and an obstruction of its independent oversight.
