New York Gov. Kathy Hochul revealed that the last Free Fishing Day of the year will be on Veterans Day, which is Tuesday, Nov. 11, in an effort to honor those who serve in the nation’s armed forces.
Free Fishing Day is a day in which the requirement for a fishing license for freshwater fishing in New York state is waived. However, it is important to note that while the license is not required, all other freshwater fishing regulations remain in effect.
“Fall is a great time of year to fish in New York’s pristine waters while honoring a veteran in your life,” Hochul said. “I encourage New Yorkers to Get Offline and Get Outside on this free fishing day to enjoy an affordable outdoor recreation opportunity on the water and to reflect on the freedoms that we have in this country thanks to our Veterans.”
There are various fish to catch across New York’s freshwaters this season. Some of the fish that can be reeled in include Trout, Pacific Salmon and Muskellunge. For the latest reports on fishing in Western or Central New York, visit the Lake Erie and Western NY Fishing Hotline and the Central NY Fishing Hotline.
Free Fishing Days are just one of the activities that contribute to Hochul’s “Get Offline, Get Outside” initiative, which encourages state residents to put down their phone and get outside.
Those in search of a fishing spot this Veterans Day should visit the Department of Environmental Conservation’s Places to Fish website.
