A child has died and another is in critical condition after they were hit by a driver Thursday while riding a minibike near 63rd Avenue North and Brooklyn Drive, according to Brooklyn Center police.
Officers responded to a report of a vehicle versus pedestrian accident around 3 p.m. Thursday, department officials said on their Facebook page. Officers learned two girls under the age of 10 were riding a minibike eastbound on 63rd Avenue North, approaching Brooklyn Drive, when they were struck by a southbound vehicle on Brooklyn Drive, approaching 63rd Avenue North.
Brooklyn Center officers, along with Brooklyn Center Fire officials, provided medical aid and CPR to the girls and they were transported to North Memorial in Robbinsdale.
One of the girls was pronounced dead while at North Memorial and the other girl is in critical condition, according to police. The driver of the vehicle remained on scene of the incident and is cooperating with the investigation. The Brooklyn Center Police Department requested the Minnesota State Patrol and Hennepin County Crime Lab for an accident reconstruction.
The investigation into the incident and the factors leading to it is currently active.
