Mayor Zohran Mamdani could make a little New York City history with his next family member, and this time the proposal comes with whiskers. Voters for Animal Rights has launched a petition asking the mayor to adopt a cat from Animal Care Centers of NYC, the city’s municipal open-admission shelter system.
No NYC mayor has adopted a cat from ACC before, and Mamdani could be the first.

Mamdani Wants a Cat

Mamdani and his wife, Rama Duwaji, have already said they plan to welcome a feline family member. The mayor already started weekly allergy shots in December 2025 to build tolerance. The plan was for him to undergo a seven-month regimen to treat his severe cat allergies and to safely welcome a feline.
The petition from Voters for Animal Rights feels like perfect timing and raises the question: Before choosing a cat elsewhere, why not visit the city’s own shelter?

Animal Care Centers of NYC Is Dealing With a Very Real Problem
Animal Care Centers cares for animals across New York City’s five boroughs and is currently facing heavy pressure due to the number of animals coming through its doors. According to the campaign materials, ACC houses more than 1,000 animals despite a capacity of about 450.
That makes visibility especially valuable. When people see public figures choosing shelter animals, adoption can feel less like a last resort and more like a natural first choice.
Mamdani is not a mayor who needs to be persuaded about animal welfare. He secured $1.5 million in the FY2027 budget for the city’s first-ever pet food pantry program and expanded access to low-cost spay-and-neuter services in collaboration with the city council.
The latest campaign by Voters For Animal Rights will have him take another step. It will cost him almost nothing and mean a great deal to the people who show up every day at ACC locations.
One Shelter Cat Can Have a Large Audience
Not one New York City mayor, across the entire history of the office, has ever adopted from ACC. That is the record sitting on the table right now, and Mamdani is in a position to break it without much effort.
A sitting mayor choosing a municipal shelter over a breeder or a pet store sends an important message. Shelters are dealing with capacity constraints across the country, but visibility from City Hall is more than a symbolic gesture. A simple act of bringing a shelter cat home can encourage other elected officials to consider the animal shelters in their municipalities.
