Autumn Glow Festival Is Bringing Hundreds of Glowing Lanterns to New Rochelle
It’s been a long, hot summer, and there’s nothing better than knowing the crisp fall breeze is on the horizon (especially if you’ve been waiting for fall since June as I have!). This fall, Westchester families will have another great reason to get out in the cool fall breeze. Glen Island Park in New Rochelle is hosting Autumn Glow Festival, a nighttime lantern display.
It’s the festival’s first stop in Westchester County, after touring other parts of the country for almost a decade. It’s set to run Friday through Sunday evenings from September 11 through November 1.
The lanterns themselves are stunning, with hundreds of large sculptures made by hand, silk stretched over steel frames and wired with LEDs. Some of them move, while others change color, but each one is based on a piece of Chinese folklore or something from nature.
Along the route you’ll find food trucks and artisan vendors, plus performances from Jumpin’ Jamie, a kids’ entertainer who’s played Field Station: Dinosaurs and Sesame Street.
Tickets and Parking
Entry is limited by the hour, so if you’re planning on a weekend night, book ahead. It takes about an hour to 90 minutes to walk through, depending on how often your kids will want to stop at every food truck or vendor tent.
Parking is free, and the park is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers. The festival goes on rain or shine, but if the weather is really bad, they let you reschedule your visit.
Early tickets start around $16, and kids 2 and under get in free.
This fall festival is a nice low-key way to get into the fall spirit, and New Rochelle isn’t the only stop in New York. The festival’s also setting up in Schenectady this year, with a few more cities apparently in the works.
