STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican who represents Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn in Congress, is taking a stand against legislators who seek to withhold federal funds from New York City in the wake of the election of Zohran Mamdani.
“The mayor-elect did not receive a mandate on Tuesday; nearly 50% of voters opposed his election and my constituents overwhelmingly rejected him and socialism,” Malliotakis said in a statement to the Advance/SILive.com. “I’m going to fight Mamdani’s radical policies, but I’ll also push back on any attempt by my own party to ‘punish’ our city. I love New York and will always fight for it and our hard-working taxpayers.”
The comments come after Malliotakis spoke with Fox News Digital against the recent effort by Rep. Buddy Carter, a Republican who represents Georgia’s first district, to strip the city of federal funding. On Friday, Carter introduced the Moving American Money Distant from Anti-National Interests Act, otherwise known as the MAMDANI Act.
The bill, which is only two pages, seeks to withhold federal taxpayer dollars to the city during the mayoralty of Mamdani.
The bill, in part, says the following:
“Notwithstanding any other provision of law, during any period in which Zohran Mamdani is mayor of New York, New York — (1) any unobligated Federal funds available for New York, New York, for any purpose are hereby rescinded; and (2) no Federal funds may be obligated or expended for any purpose to New York, New York.”
“In United States of America, a nation built on freedom, taxpayer dollars should not be used to fund communism and antisemitism,” said Carter. “Georgians want nothing to do with Mamdani’s radical beliefs, and their hard-earned money should not be wasted on programs that will bankrupt the financial capital of the world. If New Yorkers want communism, we should let them have their wish and not artificially prop them up with our successful capitalist system. Any New Yorker with common sense is welcome to move to the great, FREE state of Georgia.”
This isn’t the first time Malliotakis has defended the allocation of federal funds to the city when cuts were on the line.
“Recently, I pushed back when the Department of Homeland Security attempted to strip $100 million for critical counterterrorism funds for the NYPD,” she said. “I immediately got President Trump involved and the decision was reversed within 48 hours.”
Trump made the decision to reverse cuts in early October. The funding, provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency through its Homeland Security Grant Program, goes toward law enforcement efforts ranging from intelligence operations to mass gathering security, to equipment purchases, as previously reported.
“I am pleased to advise that I reversed the cuts made to Homeland Security and Counterterrorism for New York City and State,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. “It was my Honor to do so. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DJT”
