The New York Liberty (23-16) come off a loss that dropped them into the No. 8 spot in the WNBA playoff race as they play their final game before the FIBA World Cup break on Saturday, hosting the Chicago Sky (15-24) at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. With five games to play, the Liberty come in just a half-game behind the sixth-place Washington Mystics and two games back of the Atlanta Dream in fifth place. The Liberty share the same record as the Dallas Wings but lost the season tiebreaker. Chicago enters play with two straight losses on the heels of three consecutive wins with guard Natasha Cloud a game-time decision with a right knee injury.

New York’s offense sputtered on Thursday night in a 79-60 homecourt loss to the Golden State Valkyries, who completed a 3-0 season sweep of the Liberty. Jonquel Jones finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots for New York, which shot only 30.2% overall and 7-of-31 from 3-point range against the WNBA’s top defensive team. Breanna Stewart added 16 points in the loss.
The Sky cut a 20-point fourth-quarter deficit to just three with 2:20 to play before the host Connecticut Sun held on for an 87-81 win on Tuesday night. Cloud played just 16 minutes before leaving with a knee injury while DiJonai Carrington logged only four minutes before injuring her foot and won’t play Saturday. Kamilla Cardoso put up 24 points and 13 rebounds in the loss while Azura Stevens tossed in 18 points and Courtney Vandersloot handed out nine assists.
Stewart scores an average of 20.6 points per game for the Liberty, with Sabrina Ionescu posting 15.6 points and 4.8 assists per game and Jones getting 14.7 points and 9.1 rebounds a night. Cardoso tops Chicago with averages of 14.9 points and 8.9 boards, Sydney Taylor scores 13.8 points per game and Vandersloot dishes 5.2 assists an outing.
