STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (PIX11) — A person was bitten by a fox near the Mount Loretto Unique Area on Saturday, prompting officials to issue a rabies warning to the community.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation issued a warning to visitors at the nature preserve on Staten Island about the presence of a fox that could be infected with rabies.
DEC officials said they are searching for the fox and monitoring the situation.
They also urged people to be cautious and avoid contact with any animals in the area.
Visitors are urged to report any fox sightings involving unusual behavior to the NYSDEC dispatch at 1‑844‑332‑3267 or call 911 in an emergency.
Officials did not release any information on the condition of the person who was bitten.
