Fremantle has expanded its factual programming slate after its production company 72 Films secured a BBC commission for “Kings and Queens: The Story of the Monarchy,” a six-part documentary series commissioned for BBC Two and iPlayer. The project will explore the origins of the modern British monarchy, with Fremantle managing international distribution rights.

Simon Young, Head of Commissioning, History, said: “As the Bayeux Tapestry returns to Britain for the first time in a thousand years there feels like no better moment to bring British audiences the founding history of our modern monarchy. This is the origin story of our age, for all ages to explore, appreciate and enjoy – a proper ‘Game of Thrones’, only this time it’s real.”

Rob Coldstream, Executive Producer, added: “‘Kings and Queens’ plunges viewers straight into the heart of one of Britain’s great founding stories. A family saga told with real ambition, this is history at its most gripping, a story of bloodlines, power and betrayal that still shapes who we are today.”

The series chronicles the transformation of England between 1066 and 1216, examining how the Norman Conquest laid the foundations of the modern British state. Spanning five generations, the production follows key historical events from William the Conqueror’s invasion through the reign of King John and the signing of Magna Carta, exploring themes of power, succession, conflict and political change.

Combining cinematic dramatizations, advanced visual effects and commentary from leading historians, “Kings and Queens: The Story of the Monarchy” aims to present the evolution of medieval England while examining the challenges of centralized royal authority and the political tensions that shaped the monarchy during the period.

The series was commissioned by Jack Bootle, Head of Commissioning, Specialist Factual, for BBC Two and iPlayer. Rob Coldstream and David Glover serve as executive producers, while Simon Young is the commissioning editor. Produced by 72 Films, a Fremantle company, the project further strengthens Fremantle’s portfolio of premium factual programming for international audiences.
