Showplace Bowling Center in Travis is closing on Monday, ending a longtime borough business and a familiar spot for Staten Islanders. The alley first opened in 1987, closed in 1998, and reopened in 2004. It once featured 64 lanes, two lounges, a bowling and golf pro shop, and a full arcade game room. The wider Showplace Entertainment Center also included a multiplex movie theater, restaurants, a pizzeria, an ice cream parlor, billiards, and other attractions. People remember birthday parties, weekend hangouts, karaoke nights, turtle races, live bands, and high-roller events like the Showplace Classic. Its closure comes four years after LA Fitness shut its doors in the Travis plaza, and that building remains vacant.
