A New York City woman was the victim of a terrifying incident and is demanding action from Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
On Saturday, August 29, the New York Daily News reported that 65-year-old Lydia Zuniga was waiting for a train at a Bronx station around 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, when a stranger pushed her onto the tracks.
“I just twisted a little bit to see if the train was coming, and, next thing I know, I was flying onto the tracks,” Zuniga, who works in public safety at New York University, recounted. “The person that pushed me must have been full of anger because I felt that the push that (he) gave me was enormous.”
“He was angry at somebody, but not at me. I don’t know the person. I don’t even know who he was or exactly what he looked like,” she continued. “I don’t get it. This is my routine every day to go to work. All I was doing was going to work.”
A civilian named Malik went down to the tracks to help Zuniga as a train slowly entered the station and stopped before hitting them.
“I saw the headlights and everything,” she recalled. “If it wasn’t for Malik holding me up, I honestly don’t know what would have happened. Honestly, he saved me.”
Zuniga was rushed to the hospital and is still there, as her left leg is broken in three places.
“I’m in a lot of pain,” she said. “It’s going to be a long haul.”
Now, Zuniga expects change from the city’s leadership which includes the mayor, 34, who took office in January.
“The situation has got to stop. The city isn’t doing anything regarding crazy people. They’re running the subways, and nobody’s doing anything about it,” Zuniga declared. “If the mayor has enough guts, then he’d come and see me. I would like to talk to him because the city is not safe. The mayor needs to do something and needs to do something quickly because this cannot continue.”
Police sources revealed that the man who pushed her checked himself into a psychiatric clinic and admitted to his crime. He was then taken into custody on Friday, August 28. An NYPD spokesman told the outlet that criminal charges are pending as he undergoes a psychiatric evaluation.
