GEDDES, N.Y. — Bad weather doesn’t have to ruin a day at the New York State Fair, where several indoor attractions offer ways to stay dry while still taking in some of the fair’s biggest draws.

One option is the “Fast and the Furriest” corgi races, held inside the Expo Center three times a day. The crowd-favorite events put the dogs head-to-head as they sprint toward the finish line.

“Corgi races are traveling a little bit, but this isn’t everywhere so we thought why don’t we just bring it everywhere,” said Sergie Iandkas, owner of “the Fast and the Furriest.”

Iandkas said indoor events can be especially important when weather disrupts outdoor plans.

“You have a nice rainy day at the fair, none of the outdoor entertainment can work,” he said.

Also, inside the Expo Center, Circus Hollywood brings a three-ring show featuring high-flying performers, costumes and choreographed stunts.

“If you’ve been to the fair before and seen Circus Hollywood, you probably saw it in the big top. The show is bigger and better than ever,” said Crystal Coronas, the ring mistress.

Fairgoer Alexander Cheney said indoor options can make a big difference for families.

“It’s great to have the indoor activities too especially coming here with kids too. My daughter gets tired walking around. This is a huge fair so we came in here early so we could sit in the air conditioning,” Cheney said.

For a slower-paced indoor stop, fairgoers can head to the Wegmans Art & Home Center to browse fine art, photography, quilting and culinary exhibits.

“On hot days its good to come in and cool off. On rainy days it’s nice to just get out of the rain but you’ll be surrounded by beautiful artwork and friendly people,” said Vicki Huntley, who runs the arts and crafts room at the Creative Arts Building.

Cheney said the indoor attractions help keep the day on track when the weather turns.

“There’s something to do while it’s raining too so you’re not getting soaked or muddy,” he said.
