Queens College will host a panel discussion next week exploring the impact and legacy of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center ahead of the 40th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
“Tragedy, Trauma, and Transformation: The 9/11 Catastrophe 25 Years Later” will take place from 12:15-1:30 p.m. in the college’s Student Union Ballroom on Wednesday, Sept. 9.
The panel discussion, which will be moderated by Queens College lecturer in Urban Studies James Vacca, will pay tribute to the more than 40 members of the Queens College community who lost their lives during the attacks, including alumni, faculty members and their loved ones.
The discussion will cover a range of issues, including a focus on how anger and retributive reactions to the terrorist attacks shaped U.S. foreign policy in the 21st century led by Peter Liberman, professor and chair of the college’s Political Science department. Liberman, who lectures on international politics at Queens College, has investigated resistance and collaboration under military occupation, nuclear proliferation and U.S. foreign policy opinion among other topics.
Meanwhile, Steven Markowitz, a physician specializing in occupational and environmental medicine, will lead a study on effects on those who cleared the site surrounding Ground Zero as well as those who lived nearby. He will also discuss the WTC Health Program established to assist those groups.
Melissa Checker, chair of the college’s Urban Studies program, will offer an insight into how the 9/11 attacks reshaped Downtown Manhattan, while Queens College Interim President Elizabeth Hendrey will also offer remarks during the event.
The panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A session and a presentation by the Queens College Student Association.
