Out of the Box Theatrics will host a one-night-only screening of its 2021 virtual production of Jason Robert Brown‘s The Last Five Years February 8 at The Town Hall in NYC. The evening will be given in support of the Off-Broadway company and its continuing programming.
The film, created and originally streamed in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic that shut down live performances worldwide, features Nasia Thomas (SIX: The Musical) as Cathy and Nicholas Edwards (& Juliet) as Jamie. Tony honoree Jason Michael Webb directed and music directed. Thomas and Edwards rehearsed the film remotely and filmed it within a NYC apartment to align with pandemic-era safety protocols established by Actors’ Equity Association, the State of New York, and the federal government. The upcoming screening will be its big screen premiere.
The musical recounts a five-year relationship that ends in divorce. Consisting almost entirely of solo songs, the story unfolds alternating between Cathy and Jamie, with Cathy’s narrative starting at the divorce and moving backwards to the relationship’s beginnings, while Jamie’s proceeds chronologically. The musical, inspired by Brown’s own first marriage, originally premiered Off-Broadway in 2005, and has since become one of the Tony-winning composer’s most enduring and popular works. A feature film adaptation hit movie theatres in 2014, and a Broadway debut came in 2025, along with countless regional and educational productions staged around the world.
“The Last Five Years was born during a moment when artists had to reimagine how theatre could be created and shared,” says OOTB Founding Artistic Director Elizabeth Flemming in a statement. “Bringing this production to the big screen for the first time for a live audience is both a celebration of that journey and an investment in the future of accessible, adventurous theatre.”
