New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Tuesday called on President Donald Trump and Department of Homeland Security Sec. Markwayne Mullin to restore tens of millions of dollars in counterterrorism funding she says the state is still owed.
Hochul said the federal government last year cut about $187 million in counterterrorism and homeland security funding.
CNN reported last October that Trump was not aware of the cuts at the time. He then promised to fully restore all of the money, and several states filed a lawsuit.
New York got $100 million back, but Hochul says $87 million is still missing. The governor says this money is used for intelligence operations, security at large events and transit hubs, emergency planning, equipment and training.
“By holding this funding hostage, the Trump Administration is defunding the police,” Hochul said in a statement. “New York State continues to be the nation’s number one terrorist target – and if President Trump and Secretary Mullin really care about public safety, they should stop playing games and fully fund our vital counterterrorism efforts.”
