NEW YORK (PIX11) — Local community organizations are calling out a healthcare provider after learning that it bought a complex that includes a movie theater and a supermarket.
The coalition of community groups and local elected officials is asking NYU Langone to work with residents after it was found that it acquired the retail complex, located at 570 Second Ave., that includes an AMC movie theater and Fairway supermarket.

An online petition to save the theater from closure has amassed over 8,300 signatures as of Thursday.
“We’ve been hearing from many residents in Murray Hill and Kips Bay about how much Kips Bay Plaza matters to them.” Jessica Lavoie, VP & Chair of the Quality of Life Committee of the Murray Hill Neighborhood Association. “Places like this provide the everyday uses that make a neighborhood livable, from groceries and restaurants to entertainment and places to gather.”
A letter was sent on Monday to NYU Langone Health from the coalition stating their displeasure with the sale of the retail complex to the hospital provider, saying in part:
The residents we represent rely on this retail complex every day. Losing key neighborhood businesses—especially the AMC movie theater and the Fairway supermarket—would mean losing our main local grocery store and a place where neighbors go to relax and spend time together. These businesses also serve your employees who live, work, and raise families in Kips Bay.
It continued, stating that they hope to work with the community in preserving the retail businesses while still having the ability to invest in new healthcare facilities in the neighborhood.
The local community board will have a public hearing on the planned closure on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
