Sumac, a longtime Middle Eastern restaurant on Forest Avenue in Westerleigh, has closed after 10 years serving Staten Islanders. Known for shawarma, falafel, vegetarian fare and warm hospitality, it became a neighborhood favorite. The restaurant took its name from the spice commonly used in Middle Eastern cuisine, and readers described the owners as “nice people.” Tacojees, a separate halal grill, is set to move into the former Sumac location.
