NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Santa Clara University women’s volleyball team defeated Manhattan 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-20) on Friday inside Yale’s John J. Lee Amphitheater. The Broncos hit an astounding .463 with 37 kills and only six errors, while limiting the Jaspers to only .151 hitting.
Morgan Hayes led the Broncos (2-3) with 16 kills and three blocks while hitting .667. She had no errors on 24 attack attempts. Macy Hinshaw finished with 26 assists, five digs, two blocks and a service ace. Lexi Trapani recorded a season-high four service aces and seven digs. Bryn Shankle added three kills and a team-high four blocks.
The Broncos created early separation in the first set with Trapani serving, scoring four straight points on a Tia Kapihe kill and three consecutive Trapani aces to go up 7-1. Manhattan cut the margin to 8-6 on Emilia Kuzniar’s serve, but Santa Clara answered with a Hayes kill from Grace Flanagan and a Selin Aslayan kill to make it 10-6. Aslayan posted a hitting percentage of .417 in the match. The Broncos closed the set 25-19, finishing on a Hayes kill from Hinshaw.
In the second set, Santa Clara broke it open with a 7-0 run, turning a 13-7 lead into a 20-7 advantage behind Ashlynn Reilly’s serving and front-row blocks involving Shankle. The Broncos started the second set fast, getting kills from Hayes and Flanagan and a Trapani ace during a 5-0 opening push. Santa Clara closed the set 25-13 on Kapihe’s kill from Hailey Newell.
The Broncos erased a 5-3 deficit in the third set and moved in front 8-6 behind kills from Hayes and Flanagan and a Danielle Brown service ace. Flanagan posted a hitting percentage of .500 on the day. After Manhattan tied it at 16-16, Santa Clara scored the next four points, with Hayes adding a kill and Brown another ace during the stretch. The Broncos finished the set 25-20, with Hayes ending it on a kill. .
Brooke Johnson led Manhattan with seven kills. Ori Briger finished with 14 assists, three service aces and four digs. Emilia Kuzniar added 10 assists and matched Briger with three aces. Abby Morreale recorded four kills on six attacks without an error and added a block assist.
