With just a few days until the unofficial Labor Day campaign season kickoff, the race for New York governor had a rather tense week.
Topping this week’s headlines, Republican Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman criticized opponent Gov. Kathy Hochul for wearing a hijab during a recent visit to an Islamic community center. Hochul fired back, pointing out that the attire was a common sign of respect, and accusing Blakeman of stoking division among New Yorkers. After President Donald Trump piled on with a similar critique tied to congestion pricing, Hochul responded on social media.
“I was a guest in a Muslim house of worship and showed respect for the people who welcomed me. That used to be standard in this country before you came along,” she said.
On Friday’s show, Capital Tonight broke down the multiple exchanges and other news from the week, including Hochul’s statewide universal pre-K bump and what experts in the field are saying about it.
