Designer Tori Murphy sees curtains as an important part of a room’s overall feel. ‘They are more than just window coverings; they are a way to add texture, warmth and personality to a room. They can accentuate architectural features or draw the eye to a view outside, or quietly retreat into the background,’ Tori explains.

With minimal decoration, the smallest details become noticeable. The way your curtain falls, for example, can change the entire feel of a room. ‘The choice of header determines its character and rhythm: a flop over frill adds a playful, decorative touch, a pinch pleat introduces a classic tailored finish,’ Tori says. Here, the vertical folds feel right for the space. They bring a sense of structure without introducing another decorative element.
The proportions are similarly important. ‘I love full-length curtains that are hung generously, as they create a sense of calm and proportion, puddles of fabric on the floor is a personal choice but I always say go for it as long as it’s not in a high-traffic area as the bottoms will get grubby,’ says Tori.
Nicola and Brooklyn’s curtains are hung from ceiling tracks and fall all the way to the floor, drawing the eye upward and making the already generous room feel taller.
There’s a practical element to think carefully about, too. ‘If there’s a radiator beneath the window, don’t panic; curtains or blinds can skim just above it and be lined lightly so heat can still circulate, or if you don’t want to make a feature out of it, you can go full length with the curtains,’ Tori adds.

Tori says these choices are what give a room its personality. ‘Dressing a window is much like dressing yourself; it’s about layers, texture, and those carefully chosen details that turn something functional into a true expression of style. It’s that point of difference that will make a room sing,’ she says.
Those details don’t have to be elaborate. ‘Whether it’s a carefully chosen tie-back, a pompom trim on a blind, or a surprise backing fabric on a curtain, all these thoughtful details come together to make a space unique to you.’
Even when there’s very little in a space, what you choose to leave out, and how you handle what remains, matters more than it seems.
