NEW HAVEN, CT – The Manhattan Jaspers Women’s Volleyball team (0-6), in their final day at the Yale Invitational, fell in both of their matches to the Bulldogs from Yale (2-0) in three sets (11-25, 20-25, 11-25) as well as to the Pride from Hofstra (4-2) in three sets (15-25, 15-25, 20-25) inside John J. Lee Amphitheater on Saturday afternoon.
 
MATCH ONE: Manhattan 0, Yale 3


It was the road team holding their own to start the opening set, as Manhattan took a 6-4 lead following back-to-back service aces from Julia Pfleger. 
Six consecutive points from the Bulldogs thwarted the initial momentum from the visitors, later extending their lead to 19-9. 
Abby Morreale and Helenn Montilla tallied a pair of kills before Yale took control of the first set and won 25-15. 
Continuing their earlier pace, the Green and White scored five of the first six in set number two, capped off by a dual block from Katie Powers and Lyla Auth. 
The lead was extended out to 14-10 following a service ace from Emilia Kuzniar. 
Seven straight from Yale put them back in the driver’s seat, going up 17-14 midway through the second stanza. 
Karsyn Harris registered a pair of kills late in the set, but Yale secured five of the final seven points, taking a two-set lead. 
Yale turned the tables the third time around, rallying for six of the first seven. 
The Jaspers put up a strong fight, getting back to within two at 11-9 after a dual block from Morreale and Hanna Kaczynska. 
A defiant 14-2 run to end the set finalized the contest in favor of the Bulldogs, taking all three sets played. 

MATCH TWO: Manhattan 0, Hofstra 3


Roughly 90 minutes following the match against Yale, the Jaspers suited up again for the second leg of their day against Hofstra.
Morreale found the first three kills for Manhattan, taking the brunt of the scoring load early on. 
Kaczynska put the opening set back within seven after a kill, taking a feed from Kuzniar. 
The Green and White put the scoring back within single digits late, after a service ace from Kaitlyn Doyle, but the Pride hung strong and took the first set 25-15. 
In the second set, each side took awhile to take advantage of the other, knotting up eight times through the first 24 points. 
Hofstra found a surge midway through the second, capitalizing on a 6-1 run to take their biggest lead of the set thus far. 
After two more scores from the Jaspers, the Pride finished off the second set with six straight to take it. 
Manhattan rallied at the start of the third, taking a 7-6 lead after a service ace from Ori Briger. 
A block from both Morreale and Powers put the set back within two at 13-11 in favor of Hofstra. 
Later in the set, back-to-back attack errors put the Green and White down by three at 19-16. 
Another service ace from Briger put the score at 22-19 Hofstra, forcing a Pride timeout. 
A final block from Powers and Auth gave the Jaspers 20, but Hofstra held on and swept Manhattan.

STATS AND NOTES


Senior middle blocker Abby Morreale led the way in kills for the Green and White, collecting nine between the two matches. 
Morreale also finished first amongst her teammates in blocks, tallying seven total including a solo against Yale. 
The Jaspers hit at their best rate in the second set against Yale, with a .276 clip.
Senior and Junior setters Emilia Kuzniar (19) and Ori Briger (16) accounted for 35 of Manhattan’s 39 assists on the afternoon.

Head Coach Brooke Alverson and the Jaspers will take the week off before heading up to Rhode Island for the Friar Classic starting on Friday, September 11. The Green and White will start with the host Friars inside Alumni Hall, with action scheduled to get underway at 7:00 p.m.. Action can be viewed live on ESPN+ with a paid subscription.
