Beyoncé marked her 45th birthday by giving back to Harlem, donating $2 million to the Studio Museum in Harlem as the institution continues its work supporting Black artists and making art accessible to the community.
The singer and businesswoman made the donation Sept. 4, her birthday, giving the museum a major gift at a significant moment in its history. The Studio Museum reopened its new home at 144 W. 125th St. in November 2025 after a seven-year closure. The new building was designed by Adjaye Associates, with Cooper Robertson serving as executive architect.

Beyoncé said the museum’s commitment to the community was a major reason she wanted to support the institution.
“Art tells all our stories; the past and the present, but is not always accessible to everyone. I have always been impressed with the Studio Museum in Harlem because of its intention to make the museum an integral part of the community,” Beyoncé said, ArtNews reported. “I have been introduced to several of my favorite young and upcoming Black artists through exhibits at the Museum. It is a place of inspiration where all audiences can discover new stories through the canvases of diverse storytellers that reflect our humanity.”
The Studio Museum was founded in 1968 and has become an important institution for artists of African descent. Its mission includes supporting artists through exhibitions, education, and its renowned Artist-in-Residence program. The museum says the program has supported more than 100 graduates who have gone on to careers in the arts.
Museum Director and Chief Curator Thelma Golden welcomed Beyoncé’s contribution, saying the gift will help strengthen the museum’s work in Harlem, New York and beyond.
“I am deeply grateful to Beyoncé, both for the generosity of this gift, especially on her birthday, and for recognizing the vital role that the Studio Museum plays in people’s lives,” Golden said. “Our institution was founded to shift the arts landscape and reimagine who that landscape serves. This gift will allow us to continue strengthening our work for Harlemites, New Yorkers, and audiences across the globe.”
The donation comes as the museum enters a new chapter in its expanded 125th Street home. The Studio Museum describes itself as a nexus for artists of African descent locally, nationally and internationally, with exhibitions and programs focused on Black art and culture.
