UPDATE:
The deceased driver has been identified as Olive H. Wesley, 61 of Rochester.
The injured passenger is identified as Eric A. Trone, age 62, of Rochester, NY, who remains hospitalized in serious condition.
The driver of the tractor trailer is identified as Amritpal Singh, age 30, of Belleville, Ontario.
The investigation is continuing.
ORIGINAL RELEASE:
At approximately 2:30 a.m. on September 4, 2026, State Police assigned to Troop T, SP Buffalo responded to a motor vehicle crash on the New York State Thruway (I-90) in the town of Newstead. Investigation revealed that a 2018 Volvo tractor trailer was traveling westbound when it collided with a disabled 2012 Chevy pickup truck that was on the right shoulder.
The driver of the pickup truck was pronounced deceased at the scene. A passenger in the pickup truck was transported to Erie County Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the tractor trailer was evaluated at the scene with no reported injuries and was administered standardized field sobriety tests, which indicated no signs of impairment.
The right lane is currently blocked for response; left lane is open. Traffic delay of several miles due to morning commute volume.
The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Troop A and Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.
