A 38-year-old man has died after the vehicle he was driving was struck by a vehicle driving the wrong way on a highway in Upstate New York.
A tragic early morning accident involving a vehicle traveling the wrong way on I-787 northbound in Albany, NY, has claimed the life of 38-year-old Eric J. Hurley, of Albany, NY, according to the New York State Police.

Police said that on Sunday, October 12th, 2025, at about 4:39 a.m. State Police were dispatched to the report of an accident involving a wrong-way driver who crashed head-on with another vehicle on the northbound side of I-787 in the area of exit 2 in Albany, NY.

Upon arrival, police discovered that the driver of the northbound vehicle, identified later as Eric J. Hurley, sustained severe injuries and was declared deceased at the scene. The driver of the wrong-way vehicle, identified as 44-year-old Lewis Thomas 44, of Coxsackie, NY, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Albany Medical Center for evaluation and treatment.
All northbound lanes on I-787 between the I-87 Thruway and exit 3 were closed for hours while law enforcement investigated the accident. No charges or arrests have been made in connection with the accident, but police did say that the investigation is ongoing.
Eric J. Hurley Remembered
Soon after police announced that Hurley was tragically killed, WTEN reported that he had worked at Albany Water for the last eight years. Coworkers shared that Eric’s work ethic, kindness, and laughter will be greatly missed.
