One person later arrived at a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after gunfire Friday evening on Xerxes Avenue
BROOKLYN CENTER, MN (September 6, 2026). Four juvenile males were detained following a shooting in Brooklyn Center Friday evening that triggered a foot pursuit and police search, with investigators recovering a handgun equipped with an extended magazine and at least six spent cartridge casings.
Brooklyn Center police were called at approximately 5:30 p.m. to the 5600 block of Xerxes Avenue following reports of gunfire.
Two officers from other law-enforcement agencies happened to be in a nearby parking lot conducting a prisoner exchange when they witnessed the shooting, according to Brooklyn Center police.
Authorities said four juvenile males believed to be connected to the incident fled.
The outside-agency officers pursued the group on foot.
During the pursuit, officers reportedly saw one of the juveniles discard or conceal an object.
Police established a perimeter, and a K-9 team searched the area.
Investigators subsequently recovered a handgun fitted with an extended magazine and six or more spent cartridge casings.
All four juveniles were detained.
Police said one of the males is believed to have been directly involved in the shooting. Authorities have not publicly detailed what role, if any, each of the other juveniles played.
One person later arrived at a local hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Police said that person’s connection to the shooting had not been determined.
No Officer Fired a Weapon
The incident initially generated information suggesting that an officer might have been involved in the shooting.
Brooklyn Center police subsequently clarified that no law-enforcement officer discharged a firearm.
That distinction is important because officers from outside agencies witnessed the incident and immediately became involved in pursuing the fleeing juveniles.
The investigation involved assistance from multiple agencies, including law enforcement from St. Louis Park, Brooklyn Park, Metro Transit and Robbinsdale, along with the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, crime-lab personnel and Minnesota State Patrol aviation.
