A 19-year-old man clings to life at a Queens hospital on Sunday after being critically injured in a crash on the Cross Island Parkway on Saturday night.
Three other teenagers and a 42-year-old man were also hospitalized in the wake of the collision on the parkway’s northbound lanes near 154th Street in Whitestone at about 9:15 p.m. on Sept. 5.
Based on a preliminary investigation, police sources said, the 19-year-old man was riding inside a 2020 Toyota Camry operated by another 19-year-old man, with two other teenage passengers, ages 16 and 18, inside.
Cops said the driver attempted to move the Camry from the left to middle lane, but failed to properly navigate the merge. As a result, he collided with the rear of a 2008 Honda Accord, driving by the 42-year-old man with a 36-year-old woman riding as a passenger.
The impact caused the Toyota Camry to overturn on the parkway, and violently threw the 19-year-old and 16-year-old male passengers onto the pavement.
Officers from the 109th Precinct and NYPD Highway Patrol, along with EMS units, rushed to the scene. The 19-year-old male passenger, who suffered severe body trauma, was rushed by EMS to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Hospital in critical condition.
The 16-year-old passenger was also taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and is also in stable condition.
Police said the 19-year-old Camry driver along with the 18-year-old male passenger, and the 42-year-old Honda Accord driver, were all transported to Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx, and listed in stable condition. The 36-year-old female passenger in the Honda Accord refused medical attention at the scene.
So far, no arrests have been made in the ongoing investigation, police said.
