BOROUGHWIDE — Brooklyn will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks with a series of solemn ceremonies.
The Sept. 11 Family Group will hold its annual commemoration in Asser Levy Park in Coney Island Sept. 6.

U.S. Army Garrison Fort Hamilton will also host the “9/11 Commemoration Observance” Sept. 9 at 9 a.m. at the Fort Hamilton Memorial on the grounds of the Community Club. A brief ceremony will be followed by a wreath-laying.
“As the only active-duty military installation in New York City, the enduring shadow of Sept. 11 remains a localized, living memory that directly shapes Fort Hamilton’s modern security posture,” said the U.S. Army Garrison Fort Hamilton public affairs office in a statement.

“On that morning 25 years ago, the garrison immediately transformed into a critical staging area for emergency responders,” the statement continued. “Today, this legacy drives the installation’s uncompromising commitment to vigilance, community-led defense and antiterrorism awareness to ensure the base remains a safe, secure and resilient stronghold.”
The guest speaker for the ceremony is Fire Department of the City of New York Deputy Assistant Commissioner Joe Duggan.
A candlelight ceremony called “A Light and a Prayer” will be held at the Brooklyn Wall of Remembrance outside Maimonides Park on Sept. 10 at 5:30 p.m. The wall includes plaques of firefighters, Port Authority officers, New York City police officers, New York State officers, a member of the New York Fire Patrol and a rescue dog.

“In this, the 25th year, we are proud to hold our annual observance once again,” said the group in a Facebook post. “Please feel free to come by, light a candle, say a prayer, pay respects, share your memories. All are welcome. We remember.”
Carmine Carro Center in Marine Park will host its memorial Sept. 10 at 5:30 p.m.

On Sept. 11, a ceremony will also be held at Seth Low Park at West 12th Street and Stillwell Avenue at 11 a.m. There will be prayers from religious leaders of various faiths and speakers recalling the events of the day. Participants will include students from nearby Seth Low Intermediate School, who will perform the national anthem and lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

“Those of us who lived through the attacks remember exactly where we were when we heard that a plane had flown into the World Trade Center,” said Assemblymember William Colton.
“Even if we were not near Ground Zero, we remember our horror as the events of the morning unfolded,” Colton said. “They are seared into our memories, and we feel as strongly as we did two and a half decades ago that the victims and the heroes of that day should never be forgotten.”

Green-Wood Cemetery will host “Notes of Tribute: Viewing the 9/11 Memorial Lights” on Sept. 11 from 7 to 9 p.m.

“Green-Wood is the final resting place of more than 100 people who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, or from related illnesses in the years that followed,” said the cemetery. “We invite you to join us for an evening of reflection, guided by music and light. Together, we will remember those interred at Green-Wood, honor all 2,977 people killed that day and reflect on the lasting impact of Sept. 11 on our community.”
The program will begin at sunset and include words of remembrance, live music and time for quiet contemplation. It will take place at the Gothic Arch, located near the cemetery’s main entrance at Fifth Avenue and 25th Street.

American Veterans Memorial Pier at Shore Road and 69th Street will hold its annual ceremony at 7 p.m. The event is hosted by NIA Community Services Network in partnership with state Sen. Andrew Gounardes and Councilmember Kayla Santosuosso.
The 9/11 Living Memorial Grove of Brooklyn will hold its “Sundown Ceremony” at 6 p.m. at 4300 Fifth Ave. “The 9/11 Living Memorial Grove of Brooklyn invites you to honor and remember the lives lost and those impacted by these tragic events,” the organization said.
