WASHINGTON — The App State field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season Sunday, falling 2-1 to American after conceding the game-winning goal late in the fourth quarter.

Chloe Hook scored the lone goal for the Mountaineers (3-1), her third in three games, off an entry pass from Kassie Paul.

Dakota Anderson recorded six saves in goal, bringing her season total to 21 with two shutouts on the year.

How It Happened

1st: Defense dominated early, with both sides struggling to generate scoring chances in the period.

2nd: The Eagles (1-3) got on the board in the second quarter, deflecting an entry pass into the shooting circle and past the cage. Anderson made four saves in the first half as App State headed into the locker room facing a 1-0 deficit.

3rd: The Mountaineers came out of the halftime break with high energy. Less than three minutes into the third, Hook slotted home her third goal of the season off a Paul entry pass. App State earned one penalty corner in the period, and forced one save from the American goalkeeper.

4th: Intensity ramped up with the match tied at one. App State forced three saves and earned two penalty corners. However, American generated two penalty corners of its own in the final five minutes of regulation, converting on the second to seal the win.
