Debates over artificial intelligence are playing out in New York City public schools, where Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels have announced new restrictions on how students can use the technology.
The city is imposing a one-year ban on generative AI for students from 2-K through eighth grade, while high school students will be allowed to use AI with restrictions. Teachers will also face limits on how they can use the technology, with AI permitted for certain administrative tasks.
Mamdani said the city has not seen evidence that AI benefits elementary and middle school students outside of research sponsored by technology companies.
